  Nutrition for Massage Therapists

This course will provide an overview of nutrition principles pertinent to the field of massage therapy including nutritional requirements, basic metabolism, the function of macronutrients in the body and translation of nutritional requirements into food choices. You will learn how to apply this information in a practical way by identifying and assessing the nutritional adequacy of your own diet, looking at your own eating habits and patterns, and making any changes needed to maximize your energy throughout the work day as well as promote overall health and well being.

In this course you will learn:

- The dietary requirements for protein, carbohydrate and fat as a percentage of total calories.

- How to calculate your Body Mass Index and energy, protein and water requirements.

- The structural and functional difference between simple and complex carbohydrates and will be able to name three dietary sources of each.

- The difference between an essential and a nonessential amino acid.

- The 3 functions of dietary fat.

- How muscles are fueled during exercise.

Instructor Bio: Maria Welch

 
Maria Welch is a registered dietitian with a B.S. in Dietetics and a M.S. in Nutrition and Medical Dietetics. She has 15 years of experience in the field of dietetics including clinical, teaching, research and management. For the past six years she has been employed as Food Service Director and Clinical Dietitian at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie, a skilled nursing facility. Prior positions include group nutritionist for Northwestern University Medical School where she was responsible for group facilitation and individual counseling for the dietary arm of the Women’s Health Initiative study. She also worked as a research dietitian at the Hines VA Hospital in Illinois, where she was involved in studies on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular disease risk in men with spinal cord injuries.
